About the tramway

The tramway is part of the growing city’s public transport reform that ensures smooth daily life and mobility in Turku in the future as well.  The tramway will support the city’s growth and make public transport more attractive. The tramway will also improve the comfort of the urban environment, because all of the streets along the tram route will be almost completely renovated in conjunction with the construction.

It is estimated that in 2050, within 600 metes from the tram stops will be

  • 30% of the residents of Turku
  • 46% of workplaces
  • 42% of housing construction

Why the tramway?

  • The tram increases Turku’s competitiveness, growth and attractiveness.
  • The tram improves the city’s image along the entire route due to the renovation of roughly 12 kilometres of streets.
  • The tram increases the attractiveness, convenience and profitability of public transport.
  • The tram provides accessible, reliable and safe services to customers.
  • The tram creates sustainable city structure as land in the city is used more efficiently.

Final planning stage before possible construction

We will be drafting sketches of street plans and the principles of traffic control, calculating the costs of building the tramway and creating a construction timeline as well as preparing the acquisition of the trams. We will also be conducting ground surveys, nature inventories and archaeological probing along the tram route.

During the planning process, the necessary changes to the detailed plan will also be made and the impact of the tram will be assessed extensively e.g. in terms of land use, the municipal economy and companies.

The construction of the tramway will start if the Turku City Council decides to invest in the tramway in late 2025.
