Overall schedule

We are building a tramway from Linnakaupunki via the Market Square and Kupittaa to Varissuo. Trams will return to Turku in 2033. In this page you can find the overall schedule of construction of the tramway.

The tramway will be built in two phases

During the first phase, in 2027–2028, Turku Cathedral Bridge will be renovated as well as Uudenmaankatu and Aninkaistenkatu will be reconstructed between Eerikinkatu and Uudenmaankatu. Extensive archaeological excavations will also begin in the historic centre of Turku.

During the first phase, the street plans will be finalised and the planning process will be developed further by preparing the construction plans for the tramway streets which construction will begin in 2028.

During the second construction phase, in 2028–2032, the tramway will be built by renewing all tramway streets one street at a time along the entire 12-kilometre route. A tram depot will also be built in Iso-Heikkilä.

How will the tramway construction proceed?

Before tram traffic begins in Turku, the tramway will be built, all streets along the 12-kilometre tramway route will be renewed, archaeological investigations will be carried out, and trams suitable for Turku will be procured.

The construction schedule takes into account, among other things, the impact of Turku’s 800th anniversary celebrations, various parallel projects, and the timetable for the state’s decision on participating in the project’s costs as part of the MAL agreement.

Construction work on an individual street will take approximately one to two years.
