Tramway construction 2028–2032
During the second construction phase, from 2028 to 2032, a 12-kilometre tramway and a tram depot will be built in Iso-Heikkilä. In this page you can find information about the construction in different street sections.
During the second construction phase, the tramway will be built by renewing all streets along the entire 12-kilometre route. In addition, a tram depot will be built in Iso-Heikkilä.
Construction work on an individual street will take approximately one to two years. On long streets, the work may be carried out, for example, one block section at a time.
Several streets will be under construction simultaneously in different parts of the tramway route, and they will be completed one by one. Priority will be given to completing the western end of the route and the depot branch so that they will be ready for tramway testing and driver training.
After testing, trial runs, test traffic and driver training, tram traffic will begin in Turku in autumn 2033.
Schedules will become more precise as the project progresses
At this stage, the construction dates and durations for the different streets are preliminary and will still change. The schedules will become more precise as planning progresses and as construction at each location approaches. The construction schedule will be strongly influenced by the city’s other projects, with which the tramway construction will be coordinated.
The information below is divided into four areas. For each street, you can find information about how the street will change and when it is currently expected to be under construction according to the preliminary schedule.
City centre
Duration: Approximately 2 years and 2 months
Length of street section: Approximately 600 metres

How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, as well as the accessibility of the street environment on Humalistonkatu.
The section of Humalistonkatu between Puutarhankatu and Eerikinkatu will become a public transport street reserved exclusively for trams and buses. The section between Ratapihankatu and Puutarhankatu will be built as a shared-traffic street where private cars will also be allowed.
Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport lane.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of Humalistonkatu. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
A public transport stop will be built on Humalistonkatu near the intersection with Yliopistonkatu, in front of the Kasinonkulma building. A signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be located at the southern end of the stop.

How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, as well as the accessibility of the street environment on Eerikinkatu.
Eerikinkatu will become a public transport street reserved exclusively for buses and trams between the intersection with Eskelinkatu and the intersection with Brahenkatu. Cars will be allowed between Brahenkatu and Aninkaistenkatu.
Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport lane.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the street between Brahenkatu and Aninkaistenkatu. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
A tram stop will be built between the KOP-Kolmio building and the Hansa shopping centre. A pedestrian crossing will be built on the eastern side of the tram stop.
The bus stops will remain around the edges of the Market Square.

How will the streets change?
The project will particularly improve conditions for cycling and walking along the street section and increase the amount of urban greenery.
The northern section of Aninkaistenkatu will be renewed from the intersection with Eerikinkatu to the intersection with Tuureporinkatu. The tramway route does not run along this street section.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the street. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
New trees will be planted along the street.
The long-distance bus stops on Uudenmaankatu will be moved to the northern side of the intersection of Aninkaistenkatu and Eerikinkatu.

How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking in the historic centre of Turku.
Tracks, railway technology and permanent surface materials will be built in the Tuomiokirkko Bridge area in 2031.
A public transport lane for buses and trams will be built in the middle of the street.
The long-distance bus stops on Uudenmaankatu will be moved to the northern side of the intersection of Aninkaistenkatu and Eerikinkatu.
The number of car lanes will be reduced from four to two. Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport lane.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the street. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
A shared bus and tram stop will be built on Uudenmaankatu between Brahenpuisto and Porthaninpuisto.

The southern section of Uudenmaankatu will be renewed from the intersection with Hämeenkatu to the intersection with Itäinen pitkäkatu. The tramway route does not run along this street section.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the street. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
New trees and shrubs will be planted along the street.

A public transport lane for buses and trams will be built in the middle of Hämeenkatu.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the street. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
The number of car lanes will be reduced from four to two. Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport lane.
A shared bus and tram stop will be built near the intersection of Yliopistonkatu and Kiinamyllynkatu.
The long-distance bus stops will be moved from Hämeenkatu to the eastern side of the intersection with Kiinamyllynkatu.

Western section

Streets to be built: Satamakatu, Linnankatu, Juhana Herttuan puistokatu and Kolmen Katariinan bulevardi

Length of street section: Approximately 1 kilometre
How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, and increase the number of trees and the amount of urban greenery in the growing Linnakaupunki area.
Trams will run on their own green track in the middle of Juhana Herttuan puistokatu. On Kolmen Katariinan bulevardi, trams will run together with buses on a public transport street.
In some locations, the number of traffic lanes will be reduced from four to two. Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport street.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the streets. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
New trees will be planted along the streets.
A tram terminus will be built in front of the harbour terminal, which will be completed in 2027. A shared tram and bus stop will be built in the middle section of Kolmen Katariinan bulevardi on the public transport street.

Length of street section: Approximately 1.1 kilometres
How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, and increase the number of trees and the amount of urban greenery.
Trams will run on their own green track in Vaasanpuisto and Kirstinpuisto.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of Vaasanpuisto. A two-way cycle path will be built on the southern side of Kirstinpuisto.
Pavements and surface materials will be renewed. New trees will be planted along the streets.
Tram stops will be built in Vaasanpuisto and in Kirstinpuisto near Artturinkatu.
The depot branch will connect to the tramway at Kirstinpolku.

How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, and increase the amount of urban greenery.
Trams will run in their own lane south of the railway and at Stationsplatsen. The section alongside the railway will consist mainly of green track.
A new cycle connection will be built next to the tramway between Kirstinpuisto and Stationsplatsen. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
A tram stop will be built at Stationsplatsen in front of the old railway station. The stop will be designed to fit the distinctive features of the area and comply with its protection regulations.

Eastern section
Planned schedule: November 2028–March 2031
Duration: Approximately 2 years and 4 months
Streets to be built: Kiinamyllynkatu and Joukahaisenkatu
Length of street section: Approximately 1 kilometre
Stops: 2
How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, as well as the accessibility of the street environment. The number of trees and the amount of urban greenery will increase.
The section of Kiinamyllynkatu between Hämeenkatu and Lemminkäisenkatu will be built as a shared-traffic street where cars will also be allowed. The section between Lemminkäisenkatu and Sirkkalankatu will be reserved exclusively for trams.
Emergency and maintenance vehicles, as well as traffic to properties, will be allowed to use the public transport street.
The current bus terminal on Kiinamyllynkatu will be moved to Sirkkalankatu.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the streets. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed. New trees will be planted along the streets, and climbing poles will be installed for climbing plants.
A tram stop will be built in the Turku University Hospital area near Sirkkalankatu. A shared bus and tram stop will be built in the Kupittaa campus area near Joukahaisenkatu 8.

Length of street section: Approximately 1.5 kilometres

How will the streets change?
The project will particularly improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking in the growing Turku Science Park and Itäharju areas.
In Itäharju, the Turku Tramway Project will build only the tramway tracks, the ground reinforcements for the tracks and the railway technology. Joukahaisensilta, the pavements and cycle paths, as well as the other street infrastructure, will be built as part of the Kupittaan Kärki infrastructure project.
Joukahaisensilta and Ilmattarenkatu will be reserved exclusively for public transport. On Voimakatu, trams and buses will run in the middle of the street in a public transport lane.
Emergency and maintenance vehicles will be allowed to use the public transport street.
One-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of the streets. A two-way cycle path will be built west of the tramway on Kalervonkatu.
Three stops will be built in Itäharju:
- A shared bus and tram stop on Joukahaisensilta, near the Taitokampus campus currently under construction and other future services in the area
- On Voimakatu near Karjakatu
- Near Tierankatu, close to the Prisma store in Itäharju

Streets and areas to be built: Jaaninoja, Västäräkinkatu, Keltasirkunkatu and Littoistentie
Length of street section: Approximately 2.2 kilometres

How will the streets change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking, and increase the number of trees and the amount of urban greenery.
Trams will cross Jaaninoja and run through Laukkavuorenpuisto on their own green track. Västäräkinkatu will be built as a cycle street between Jaanintie and Keltasirkunkatu.
On Littoistentie, trams will run on their own green track along the southern edge of the street. The number of car lanes will be reduced from four to two, and the lanes will be located along the northern edge of the road.
A two-way cycle path will be built in Laukkavuorenpuisto. Two-way cycle paths will be built on both sides of Littoistentie. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
A large number of trees, shrubs or perennials, as well as vegetation for stormwater management, will be planted along the entire street section.
Tram stops will be built in the centre of Laukkavuorenpuisto and near the Hurttivuori shopping centre.

Streets to be built: Littoistentie, Karvataskunkatu and Suurpäänkatu
Length of street section: Approximately 1.7 kilometres
Stops: 4
How will the streets change?
The project will particularly improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking in Varissuo.
On Littoistentie, trams will run on their own lane underneath the Varissuo shopping centre. On Karvataskunkatu and Suurpäänkatu, trams will mainly run in the same lane as cars.
Two-way cycle paths will be built on one side of the streets. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
Four stops will be built in Varissuo:
- A shared bus and tram stop near the Varissuo shopping centre
- A shared bus and tram stop on Karvataskunkatu at the intersection with Krööpilänkatu
- A shared bus and tram stop on Suurpäänkatu near Annikanpolku
- The tramway terminus near Kraatarinkatu

Depot area and depot branch
Planned schedule for the depot area: September 2029–September 2031
Duration: Approximately 2 years
Turku’s tram depot will be built in Iso-Heikkilä, at the end of Kiertotähdentie. The depot will have storage facilities for a total of 14 trams. The depot area will be sufficient for operating the harbour–Varissuo tram line.
The depot area will include tram storage halls, maintenance facilities, a spare-parts warehouse, staff social and break facilities, and office premises. The depot yard will contain tracks that will be used to move trams between the different depot halls and to carry out short test runs.
The depot building will have a total floor area of slightly more than 10,000 square metres. The depot yard will cover approximately three hectares.

Streets to be built: Kirstinpolku, Revontulenkatu and Kiertotähdentie
Length of street section: Approximately 1.1 kilometres
How will the streets along the depot branch change?
Trams will travel on their own track along Kirstinpolku to the depot. On Revontulenkatu and Kiertotähdentie, trams will share the traffic lane with cars.
The depot entrance will be located at the end of Kiertotähdentie.
A two-way cycle path will be built along the eastern edge of Kirstinpolku. Pavements and surface materials will be renewed.
