Preliminary street plans for the Turku Tramway project have been published – feedback from residents will be collected with a survey
Preliminary street plans for the Turku Tramway can be commented in the map-based survey from 8 to 28 September. The preliminary plans show how streets along the route would change if the tramway is decided to be built in Turku. Plans have been published for the entire 12-kilometre tramline from the ferry terminal via the city centre and Kupittaa to Varissuo. The plans will be presented this September at events across the city.
The preliminary street plans show how the route of the tramway would be built, including lanes, bike and pedestrian paths and green spaces. The plans take into account utilities and infrastructure below the street level, such as water pipes, sewers, cables and reinforcing structures. The plans have been prepared as part of the ongoing planning and design of the tramway.
“Along the 12-kilometre route, streets will be rebuilt almost completely, from underground utilities up to the street surface as well as new pedestrian paths and bike lanes”, says Susan Nymander, Planning Manager at the City of Turku.
The plans can be viewed on the Turku Tramway website and in the map-based online survey tool. Preliminary street plans have been published for all streets along the tramline and the connecting track to the depot.
“The preliminary street plans help understand how the tramway will look like once it is completed. They show the exact locations of tram stops, bike paths and green spaces. We are publishing the plans now in order to collect feedback to assist in further planning, says Lauri Räty, Design Manager at Turku Tramway Ltd.
Feedback from the public to be used to assist in further planning
Anyone can comment on the plans in the map-based survey tool. The survey is open for three weeks from 8 to 28 September. Leaving a comment is quick and simple, and you can leave as many comments as you like. You can comment on anything that appears in the plans. The plans are also available in PDF format on the Turku Tramway website.
The Turku Tramway Alliance will read all submitted comments and use the feedback in future planning where applicable. A summary of received comments will be submitted to the City Council in spring 2026 as part of other supporting documentation for the tramway. Turku City Council is due to make its decision whether or not to build the tramway in Turku by June 2026.
If it is decided to build the tramway, the preliminary street plans will be finalised and submitted to the City of Turku Urban Environment Committee for approval in accordance with standard procedure. As part of the process, the plans will be made available to the public. Detailed construction plans would be prepared after the street plans have been approved.
