Tuomiokirkko Bridge area 2027–2028
Tuomiokirkko Bridge will be renovated and a public transport corridor will be built in the area in 2027–2028. The work will affect travel and public transport routes in the city centre. Follow the progress of the work on this page.

Traffic arrangements and diversion routes
From April 2027 until November 2028, Tuomiokirkko Bridge and the section between Eerikinkatu and Hämeenkatu will be closed. The information below explains how different modes of transport will move through the area while the construction site is in operation.
Public transport: Buses will be rerouted away from Tuomiokirkko Bridge in February 2027. Auransilta Bridge will be reserved for public transport from February 2027 until November 2028.
Car traffic: In February and March 2027, one traffic lane in each direction will be available in the construction area. Private car traffic on Auransilta Bridge will be prohibited from February 2027 until November 2028.
Walking: Pedestrians will be able to cross Uudenmaankatu in the transverse direction throughout the construction period.
The River Aura can be crossed on foot via a temporary bridge to be built at the site of Tuomiokirkko Bridge. The quality of the temporary bridge, including its accessibility, is still being assessed. Kirjastosilta, Auransilta and the other permanent bridges will also remain available to pedestrians.
Cycling: Cyclists will be able to cross Uudenmaankatu in the transverse direction throughout the construction period. The River Aura can be crossed by bicycle via Kirjastosilta, Auransilta and the other permanent bridges. For safety reasons, cycling will not be permitted on the temporary bridge.

How will the streets and bridge change?
The project will improve conditions for public transport, cycling and walking in the middle of historic Turku.
- A public transport lane will be built in the middle of the street. A public transport stop with signal-controlled pedestrian crossings will be built on Uudenmaankatu between Brahenpuisto and Porthaninpuisto.
- The long-distance bus stops on Uudenmaankatu will be moved to the north side of the intersection of Aninkaistenkatu and Eerikinkatu.
- The number of car lanes will be reduced from four to two.
- One-way cycle paths and renewed pavements will be built on both sides of the street.
- The tracks, railway technology and permanent surface materials for this section will be built in 2031–2032.
- The northern section of Aninkaistenkatu, between Eerikinkatu and Tuureporinkatu, and the southern section of Uudenmaankatu, between Hämeenkatu and Itäinen pitkäkatu, will be built in 2031–2032.
How the construction will proceed
January 2027
Preparatory work will begin. Temporary traffic arrangements will be established on the streets. New traffic signs and guidance signs will be installed in the area, and the traffic lights will be reprogrammed.
February–March 2027
The northernmost traffic lane of Tuomiokirkko Bridge and Uudenmaankatu will be taken out of use. A temporary bridge over the River Aura will be built for pedestrians and cyclists.
April 2027
The renovation of Tuomiokirkko Bridge will begin. The street section between Eerikinkatu and Hämeenkatu will be completely closed to traffic.
Street surface materials, such as asphalt and paving stones, will be removed. Archaeological excavations in historic Turku will begin.
May 2027–April 2028
The archaeological excavations in the street section will take approximately one year.
While the excavations are still under way, new cycle paths and pavements will be built along the edges of Porthaninpuisto and Brahenpuisto on Uudenmaankatu.
May 2028
Once the archaeological excavations have been completed, the historical layers remaining beneath the street surface will be protected.
Municipal engineering pipes and cables running along the street will be moved beneath the traffic lanes. Pipes and cables running transversely beneath the public transport corridor will be protected.
September–October 2028
Crushed aggregate will be laid on top of the foundation structures. Surface structures, such as kerbs, will be built on the street. The street will be paved with asphalt.
A temporary public transport stop for buses will be built on Uudenmaankatu between Porthaninpuisto and Brahenpuisto.
November 2028
The first phase of construction in this section will be completed.
The tramway and the related railway technology will be built in the street section in 2031–2032.

The preliminary street plans show the area around Cathedral Bridge
- before the construction of the tramway in 2028–2031 and
- in its final form after the tramway has been built in 2032.
